Ben Heine, the artist behind the Pencil vs. Camera project, has yet another tricks up his sleeve. This time, Heine offers a modern take on pointillism, the technique popularized by Georges Seurat in "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte."
This portrait is only made with "flat circles" on a black background. Every circle has a single color, a single tone and a single size. I placed each circle one by one. It's a time consuming method. Please see some details, the work in progress and other portraits here below. If you wish, you can also view this making of my portrait of Elvis Presley (video) to understand how I'm exploiting this technique with circles. The above portrait was featured on "Cult Of Mac" in March 2012.

Lecture: Manga History

The British Design and Art Direction educational charity recently organized a lecture series on Japanese creativity featuring manga expert Helen McCarthy, the author of The Art of Osamu Tezuka: God of Manga.

"...Manga are really packages -- containers -- for hopes and dreams and fears and manga are where we decode our ideas about Japan against its own ideas," McCarthy says, "And we learn that decoding through the language of line, a narrative language that is quite different from words. But if we don't know its history, we won't see it clearly, we'll see it as 'alien' or 'other' and it actually isn't 'alien' or 'other,' it's actually much closer to home than you think."

Mash-Up: Avengers / Sailor Moon

Available for purchase at Society6

I hesitate to call this a lineup as it's really just drawings done individually that I tried to paste together somewhat coherently. These are drawings I have been posting on my tumblr for the past week.

Some of the original drawings I changed a bit for the sake of the lineup just so it would flow a bit better. I also gave Sailor Ironman a visor because Ironman needs more gadgets.

You may need to download for the full view, it's pretty wide.

Tech: Build With Chrome

If Minecraft isn’t enough to satisfy your building-structures-from-blocks cravings then here’s good news—Google and LEGO have teamed to let you build LEGO structures onto Google Maps with Build With Chrome. The only catch is you can only build in Australia and New Zealand because the project is commemorating 50 years of LEGO in Australia.

First, you get allocated a plot of land. Then, you choose from a variety of LEGO bricks and extras. But if you’re thinking of building a giant phallus in the Outback, think again—all the buildings have to be vetted before being published for the public to see. But once they are approved, they’ll be open for the public to explore.

Installation: Overture

Interactive LED lighting installation by Takram, Japan

This installation in Milan is composed of 100 light bulb suspended in a 120 square meter room lined with arch-shaped mirrors and a floor covered in crushed marble gravel.

Each bulb contains water and an LED that illuminates the surface of water from above. Touching the bulb initiates the wave-like sequence of brightening and fading pulsations, roughly analogous to heartbeats.

Driving down the street in LA, you may notice coffee shops, gas stations or motels with bright primary colors, sweeping lines, bold angles and a retrofuture feel: Googie - Architecture of the Space Age. It was originally meant to look futuristic, but now it's considered kitsch. Even the most mundane food tasted good if the restaurant featured Googie-style archetecture and signage. iO9 collects some examples of Googie. Retronaut has examples from a children's encyclopedia, and the Seattle PI offers us a video and slideshow of the Seattle World's Fair, with lots and lots of Googie. ArchDaily writes: Googie Architecture: Futurism Through Modernism. One of the most prominent uses of Googie is at Disney, with the stunning mural The Prologue and the Promise. Eldon Davis(slideshow), LA architect who 'defined it and refined' Googie style, passed away last year.

Short Film: Suckablood

Suckablood by BloodyCuts

Created in a visual style reminiscent of Sin City, Suckablood is an intense tale of gothic horror about a little girl named Tilly who, like any pretty girl in a fairy tale, has an evil stepmother. The stepmother curses her by calling upon a monster to carry her off if she sucks her thumb again.

The resulting tension may not be appropriate for younger children, but it's guaranteed to be entertaining for older audiences.

OpEd: Web Browser as Art Gallery?

For the past 200 years, the gallery has been the home of new and cutting-edge art, a place where the art community can come together and share new ideas. But in this episode, we ask: is the web browser replacing the gallery as the best place to view amazing, cutting-edge art?!? In the era of the internet, you can view remarkable art from the comfort of your laptop. Accessible to virtually everyone, web art does away with the physical limitations of the gallery and makes impossibly cool art a part of our daily lives!

Video: Starry Night in Dominos

FlippyCat of Domona Lisa fame has re-created Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night using 7,067 very carefully positioned dominos over the course of eleven hours.
"The first attempt failed, when I dropped a screw from the camera rig onto it. I was able to improve the swirling clouds better in the second attempt as a result though. I do not know how long the first attempt took, but I did not have any accidents building like I did in the second attempt!

There were 2 small breaks in the fall of this project. I did not complete the leading grey line and left out a domino which stopped the reaction in the bottom. The star that is left standing was very close to falling, but the first dominos held in place :("

Signal to Noise by Brussles-based artistic collective LAb[au]

This installation at the Toronto National Airport immerses the spectator in patterns of sonic motion, based on generative principles executed by 512 mechanical split-flaps. The expression ‘signal-to-noise’ is a ratio of useful to useless information in a data exchange, and the work consists of a circular structure that contains four horizontal rows of 128 split-flaps at eye level. Visitors are invited to plunge into the kinetic composition, surrounding themselves with the eternal calculation process of an auto-poetic machine.

Video: O (Omicron)

O (Omicron) by Romain Tardy (AntiVJ)

A permanent installation at Hala Stulecia in Wroclaw, Poland When opened, Hala Stulecia was the largest reinforced concrete structure in the world. With a diameter of 65m it was home to the largest dome built since the Pantheon in Rome eighteen centuries earlier.

The piece proposed for the Centennial Hall of Wroclaw is based around the notion of timelessness in architecture, and the idea of what future has meant throughout the 20th century.

Taking the 1910’s as a starting point (the dome was erected in 1913), historical and artistic references were used to reveal the architecture of the space.

By using references such as Fritz Lang’s Metropolis or the utopian projects of Archigram to confront the different visions of the future at different times, Romain Tardy and Thomas VaquiĂ© were interested in trying to create a vision of a future with no precise time reference. A timeless future.

"Sadly Cuusoo considers Portal an innappropriate license for unspecified reasons, and although we tried numerous forms of contact we were unable to appeal this decision.

We didn't know this until we tried to submit the project, so we're left with a polished piece of work even though it's not possible to get supporters for it. So here are the results of our work, spread over this Flickr set and this Flickr set. Enjoy!"

Video: The Rise Of 8-Bit Art

"The Evolution of 8-Bit Art" from PBS's Off Book
Beginning with early Atari and Nintendo video games, the 8-bit aesthetic has been a part of our culture for over 30 years. As it moved through the generations, 8-bit earned its independence from its video game roots. The idea of 8-bit now stands for a refreshing level of simplicity and minimalism, is capable of sonic and visual beauty, and points to the layer of technology that suffuses our modern lives. No longer just nostalgia art, contemporary 8-bit artists and chiptunes musicians have elevated the form to new levels of creativity and cultural reflection.

My interpretation of what a real POrtal gun would be like if one existed. Based on the video game, POrtal. I tried to match the game as close as possible. This was the most challenging project I have ever undertaken, consisting of 3D tracking, seamless camera cuts and 3D camera projection. This started out as an experiment since I didn't think I could even pull it off, if I knew it would've turned out as good as it did I would've put more of a story behind it. O well, it makes up for in Visual Effects, ENJOY!

Video: Van Gogh and Modern Art

"Vincent's passionate belief was that people wouldn't just see his pictures, but would feel the rush of life in them; that by the force of his brush and dazzling color they'd experience those fields, faces and flowers in ways that nothing more polite or literal could ever convey.

His art would reclaim what had once belonged to religion - consolation for our mortality through the relish of the gift of life. It wasn't the art crowd he was after; he wanted was to open the eyes and the hearts of everyone who saw his paintings. I feel he got what he wanted."
